Leiden is the European City of Science 2022!

In 2022, Leiden’s connection to science is celebrated all year round. As part of that, Leiden University brings you Leiden Ludens! Leiden Ludens will add to the City of Science’s already extensive list of activities by organising events surrounding play. You can find us all around Leiden throughout 2022, doing all things play! Make sure to keep an eye on our events page and timeline.

The name Leiden Ludens is derived from the famous work of prof. Johan Huizinga (1872-1945): Homo Ludens. Johan Huizinga is one of Leiden University’s famous academics, leaving a legacy recognised around the world. His book, first published in 1938, remains the foundation and standard of scholarly approaches to play.

The title Homo Ludens could be loosely translated to Playing Man, suggesting that humanity is displayed and shaped in play. The Leiden Ludens project, in turn, suggests that (at least this year) Leiden is explored and discovered through play. And not just by academics! Everyone can participate in the events we will be organising.
